Mossy Ryan Luke - RIP
1948 - 2009

Rearcross FC was deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely death of Mossy Ryan Luke last Thursday evening. Mossy was a true and loyal friend of Rearcross FC in many ways and was always there to offer advice to put us on the straight and narrow relative to on field and off field activities. In the many ironies that unfolded over these past days, onlookers might have thought that the Club had a share holding in Mossy’s farm machinery as the Club always had first choice on Mossy’s resources and indeed as late as last Wednesday, Mossy’s tractor was used to roll the field as we prepared to host the NTSL v Limerick Desmond League representative match. Mossy spent most of his soccer playing days with Crough Rovers and provided fierce but fair opposition to Rearcross teams during the Western League era and was also a diligent and efficient mentor with Crough Rovers and the Western League Management committee during that era. Rearcross FC’s first tournament was held in 1972 where Crough Rovers and Murroe qualified for the final after hotly contested qualifying rounds. Murroe held a one nil lead with four minutes remaining before Mossy pounced for two late goals to seal a famous win for Crough Rovers.
In later years Mossy played with gusto in Rearcross FC local tournaments and was also a very active supporter of our various fundraising activities including a head shaving fundraiser in 1996 where Mossy was a willing participant. In a further irony, Mossy was to spend his final moments in the Markets Field Limerick where he had previously watched the successful Limerick team of the late seventies and in later years Mossy was a very active owner and trainer in Greyhound racing circles.
We would like to tender our sincerest sympathy to Phyllis, Fiona, Davy, John, Matthew, Tommy and Darragh in addition to Mossy’s extended family and wide circle of friends.
