Rearcross National School turn in strong performances in the FAI Primary 5-a-side Tournament

Rearcross National School recently entered 2 teams in the 2010 Tipperary Primary Soccer Schools 5-a-side tournament which took place in Two Mile Borris. It was the first time that the school had entered a team in this competition which took place over 3 days in the Littleton venue and they were joined by 69 other teams from throughout the county.

Rearcross A proceeded through the first group stage without problems as they recorded comprehensive victory in each of Wednesday’s games with each player in the squad getting on the score sheet. Despite the improvement in the quality of the opposition, they continued this fine form into the second group stage on Thursday and advanced once more as group winners. They met Gortnahue in the Quarter final and Dylan Ryan and Patrick Deegan were on target once more to send Rearcross into the last four despite conceding a late consolation goal. They came up against a strong Ballinree side in the semi final and were edged out by 1 goal to nil. Ballinree scored the all important goal 3 minutes into the 2nd half after a quick counter attack. Rearcross threw everything they had at them for the remainder of the game to force an equaliser but it was just one of those occasions where they did everything but score. Ballinree went out to deservedly win the final on a 5-1 scoreline.

However Rearcross A can be proud of their achievement in reaching the last 4 of the 71 teams in the county in their first year in the competition. They scored a total of 49 goals while conceded only 2 losing out narrowly to the eventual winners in very well run tournament.

Rearcross B were drawn in a tough group in the first round of the tournament. Despite their youth gave a good account of themselves in each of their 3 matches and in a different group they probably would have proceeded to the 2nd group stage.  They recorded a fine victory over in their second match with Emmet Boyle and Sam Wilkins on target. Conor Nolan deservedly got on the score sheet in their final game and John Nolan give a fine performance in goal throughout. The majority of the team will be eligible next year and should be a team for the future.
