Cappamore clinch first Tournament Title
Cappamore Celtic 1 - Murroe AFC 0
Cappamore Celtic made up for the disappointment of losing the 2008 and 2009 Tournament Finals with a narrow one nil victory over neighbouring and Limerick League Divisional 1B rivals Murroe AFC in this floodlit Tournament Final played at Rearcross FC Grounds last Friday night. Both teams played fluent football throughout despite the wet and blustery conditions, Cappamore made the early incisions with Eoin Hartnett and David Rainsford to the fore in the Murroe rearguard to keep the score line intact. Cappamore's Paudie Coyle was a handful and worked hard throughout with mazy runs and good first touch football and it was from a Coyle layoff in the 8th minute that Cappamore should have opened their account, however Murroe's Damien Ryan closed in to avert the danger. Cappamore took the lead midway through the opening half when Adam Keogh squared to Robert McLoughlin who rifled to the net from the edge of the eighteen yard box. It was end to end in the second half and Cappamore should have put the game beyond the reach of the defending Tournament holders when the ball broke through on goal with fourteen minutes to go, however the ball rolled barely wide of the upright when it seemed there was time for the Cappamore attack to turn the ball inside the post which was a real let off from a Murroe perspective. As happens, Murroe upped the ante after this close call and were unlucky not to snatch an equaliser. The Cappmore defence was at sixes with five minutes to go and Murroe were unlucky not to bundle the ball over the line before the danger was eventually averted and then Michael Ryan's effort from close range was blocked on the line two minutes from time, so it was not to be for Murroe on this occasion.
Cappamore were deserving winners on the night and became the 21st title holders of the Tournament in it's current format, notwithstanding those epic Tournaments held in Rearcross during the seventies and eighties. Murroe were missing some key players on the night and were somewhat unlucky in the end not to have taken the game to a penalty shoot out. After match presentations took place in Kennedy's Lounge, our thanks to Rody & Ann Kennedy and Family for their ongoing sponsorship of the Tournament.
