Rearcross 'A' 1 - Nenagh AFC 'A' 5
Rearcross welcomed last season's league champions Nenagh AFC to a wet and windy Rearcross on last Wednesday night. Although Nenagh are the current league champions Rearcross had reason to be optimistic having beaten the same opposition four times in the last six seasons and having been very unlucky to lose out to their town neighbours Nenagh Celtic on a one nil scoreline in their last outing. Rearcross were dealt a sucker blow in the 5th minute when Trevor Morrisey broke behind the Rearcross rearguard and rifled a shot to the top of the net. Rearcross regrouped after this however and grabbed an equaliser when a good cross from Simon Kennedy found Liam Ryan in the box whose header was blocked by the goalkeeper but finished by the in rushing Paul Murphy. Rearcross nearly went ahead after this when Liam Ryan was unlucky to see his shot saved by the Nenagh custodian. Rearcross were let off in the 23rd minute when Trevor Morrisey send a ball across the box but no Nenagh player could get on the end of it. Rearcross were creating their chances and were well in the game but were struck a bad blow when Nenagh’s Johnny O’Gorman leapt highest to send a great header to the net from Trevor Morrisey’s corner kick.
Rearcross made a bright start to the 2nd half and Davy O’Toole got a good shot in just after the restart. Rearcross were defending well at this stage but were beginning to come under a bit of pressure. Greg Kennedy made a good save to tip the ball over the bar in the 62nd minute. Rearcross were still in the game and Declan O’Toole was unlucky not to break through but the Nenagh keeper gathered to avert the danger. Nenagh extended their lead in the 73rd minute when Trevor Morrisey got his 2nd of the day. Nenagh got their 4th goal of the day when Cliff Moloney finished well from inside the box. Rearcross didn’t give up though and Derek O’Toole was unlucky not to score with a great header in the 82nd minute. Noel Tucker finished the scoring in the 90th minute to copper fasten the win for Nenagh. Although Rearcross lost 5 1, they can take a lot of heart from their performance. They have also played two of their toughest league fixtures and it’s a long, long season.
